The total length of line segment is 120ft. As it is divided in the ratio 3:5, let thelength of AB and BC be 3x and 5x respectively. Now form an equation in x.

3x + 5x = 120
8x = 120
x = 120/8
x = 15

Since length of AB is 3x
length of AB = 3 * 15
= 45ft.

I would like to challenge the previous person's answer. Let's use some basic algebra rather than random math. The correct way should be 3x + 5x = 120. Solve for x.

8x = 120
x = 120/8
x = 15

AB = 3 * 15 = 45 ft
BC = 5 * 15 = 75 ft

To check your answer: 3/5 = 0.6 -> 45/75 = 0.6

AB would be (120 / 8) * 3 = 45 ft

3/5 (yes 3/5ths or 3 divided by 5) times 120

that will get you your segment AB length.

3:5 is same as 3/5.

good luck

AB = AC - BC
AB + BC = 120
AB/3 = BC/5
BC = 5/3AB
AB + 5/3AB = 120
3AB + 5AB = 360
8AB = 360
AB = 360/8
AB = 45
BC = 45/3 * 5
BC = 75
75+45 = 120
