Because if they are "famous" someone might be more interested in them rather than in who they truly are.

I guess some people crave a lot of attention that they can't have in real life. If that person can't get famous from real life, then they would lie and pretend to be someone else. They wish to be that famous person instead of trying or stuggling to get famous.

I think they don't like themselves very much, and hope to impress other people by pretending to be one of their favorite celebrities.
I agree, it IS annoying....but i also think it's sad!
BTW : when I asked last week if anyone knew an active fan-site dedicated to Blythe Danner, someone (sorry, forgot who) asked me if I was Blythe Danner herself, trying to get people interested in her.
The answer is : "No, I'm not Blythe Danner, just me.
And IMHO Ms. Danner doesn't need to lobby......she's in the news almost every day already....see : www.Topix.net (some critics even think she may get a "Best supporting actress" Oscar-nomination for her role in "The last kiss")"

They are bored, want attention, have low-self esteems, and want to be just like the person they're pretending to be I think

Perhaps because they know they are anonymous and they wish to seek attention with hopes to actually get it. Hey, maybe they're doing it to study for a report in college... human behaviour online towards celebrities? ;)
