I have a violin that was passed down to me, and don't know how to play, but I am willing to learn. Can anyone tell me what strings are what, and what music is good for beginners?

I would suggest going to a local stirng instrument store and getting suzuki books. They are the books that are the easiest to learn, and the strings, in order from thickest to thinnest are... G-D-A-E

The best way to be able to appreciate studying the violin is to hire a violin teacher to make sure you are doing all the things you need to do in order to develop good violin playing skills. Without a teacher, it is easy to get confused and frustrated at not having all the answers you need. A good teacher will spot bad playing tendencies to prevent bad habits you may pic up along the way. A good teacher will always give you music which is applicable to your level of competence, and challenge you with pieces that will develop your skills. Although, over time, all of this costs some serious cash, it is all worth it in the end since you made sure you learned from someone with experience rather than one's whimsy.
