I can understand the logic behind building the fence. It certainly will drastically reduce the influx of illegal immigrants, drug trafficking and prostitution trafficking.

But why did the Senate vote down the Guest Worker Program? I’ve always thought this was one of Bush’s better, more practical concepts. Let them come in as registered ‘guest’ workers, let them work and collect legal taxes on the work they provide.

Can anyone here provide a viable reason why this provision was excluded from the just passed Senate bill?

God, I did not say I support the wall. I said I understand the logic behind it. The Berlin wall did manage to keep most East Germans from deflecting to West Germany during the Cold War. Good idea or not, such walls do work to a certain extent.

Dirty little secret being many Republicans want to keep these workers off the books. That means the going rate which still has built into SS costs and unemployment insurance all ends up in their pocket plus the frighten illegal will work for less.

On the surface, it is probably claimed that a Guest Worker Program would be a back door for illegals to come into the country. It is probably alleged that these "guests" won't leave once their term of work expires, and will become untaxed, undocumented workers.

In reality, the opposition is probably an attempt to win labor support and support from economic populists. A lot of people don't like the idea of cheap competition from overseas, and don't want to see guest workers, no matter how good it could be for the country as a whole.

This is truly a good indication of the lack of support for the Bush agenda by his own party. Voters in this country are not ready to support such a bill and they wouldn't . It is just another way to make sure the republicans get their votes. I'm sure that , if they retain control in Nov., the bill will be brought up again and passed. Hopefully, with some serious restrictions.

It was excluded because the American people want the border secured before any thing is added to the legislation. The legislation will be changed as soon as the November election is over with. Politicians always use these tactics when a matter is so controversial. A guest worker program is needed but not at the expense of more lives because of unsecured borders.

Because, it's an election year and the country is so divided on this issue. They would rather play it safe and let the next bunch deal with it. I believe the guest worker program is needed, however, I don't agree with the fence. California already has a fence, and it's not working. There are still a large number of illegals crossing over and under. A fence would cost alot of money to build and wouldn't completely serve it's purpose.

I don't think they could work any thing out with the House who were totally against the guest worker thing.

The Senate has no logic, look at all the other laws they are passing.

You are honestly going to tell me you believe a fence in the middle of nowhere is going to stop illegal immigration, are you joking?
