Why is it that all bathroom stall walls don't touch the ground? And do they really have to have a space for the door? Instead of bowing down to see if someone is there, couldn't you have a Vacant/Occupied sign?

The only way for you to get locked in is if someone nailed the door shut with wooden planks... or you stayed in too long and the latch rusted.

so immature people can use mirrors too see under them..JK.. I actually know this one.. Not all stalls are.. but the ones that aren't are tiled closets.. usually you only see them in Exec washrooms.. The space is there for two reasons.. one COST.. it is cheaper..two.. cleaning.. the more cracks and crevices you have the harder it is to clean.. in a bathroom there are some downright EVIL microbiological agents about.. many of them deadly.. so I'm sure ease and effectiveness of being able to clean under and around things is some thing one who knows about these things could appreciate..But even if you don't know (now you do) they are there for your benefit

Ventilation is a happy thing in tiny bathroom stalls.
Imagine a huge 400 pound guy has just eaten 12 chili dogs and 14 enchiladas for lunch, and he's got the bubbly. He uses the only bathroom stall in the whole building right before you.
Now, if you really want stalls with no ventilation, go for it, but I'm all about letting some of that air out!

it's cheaper to mass produce a standard stall to fit many application, stalls in older buildings or the classier country club places are like little rooms with stall door all the way to the floor

Maybe to allow an overflow from any stall to get to a drain? Just a guess.

some bathroom stalls go all the way down, but it's most likely because it saves money. they had this discussions on an old episode of Seinfeld, btw.
