Why do so many people use P2P file sharing services when it's obviously wrong and illegal? (and dont say "because people are stupid")

The services themselves aren't illegal. Meaning there are a lot of "legal" files that are transmitted over P2P legitimately. Such as ISO files for Linux distros or huge video podcasts etc...

Why do people download copyrighted files such as movies and music? Well, becuase it's easy, it's free and there's no competing service provided by studios that offers anything comparable. For instance, if you wanted a DVD of "Old School" you could just download it, burn to DVD and play it all you want over P2P.

It's not as easy if you do it legally. There's no quality service that lets you download a DVD and burn it to disc that isn't riddled with problems and errors. In my opinion the studios are overly paranoid about their product and instead of making it easy for people to buy and burn, they make doing so - so restrictive that it frustrates and confuses most users.

Then they see P2P which is just search, download, and play - 100% easy and of course free.

Because people enjoy getting things for free. Many people, when given the option of paying money risk free, or paying nothing with a slight risk attached, they'll take the free option. Its that simple.

Besides, what are the chances they'll even get caught? The person hosting an illegal download is much more likely to get caught and prosecuted than the people downloading it.

Edit: To clarify, I do not condone illegal downloads. I pay for my software.
