I'm applying to college [undergraduate] right now and I can't decide what I want to major in. I know the usual cliche, "major in something you love" but I want a major that has substance, one that will have good job oppurtunities. Anyways, I was considering economics but I haven't had economics yet (next semester) I was wondering if that was a "good" major. What job prospects are out there if someone majored in economics after getting atlease a masters. What are the courses like? I know it depends on the university and professors but the basic course can't be extreme from one university to another, right? I'm open to other suggestions. Thank You.

Any major suggestions in the fields of History, Science, or Mathematics. English isn't my forte, unfortunately. Thanks.

I personally found economics excruciatingly dull. The reason why you are told to major in something you love is that you will enjoy the classes much more. Frankly, in terms of future employment, I would think majoring in math would make you stand out more than something like history. Another area to consider, which is different than economics, is finance/accounting, which uses mathematics but in a practical way that translates into immediate job skills. Economics is more theoretical. When you get out into the world, you want to be able to find a career that inspires you year after year, and picking a major is kind of practice for that. But you should keep in mind that your major does not necessarily translate into doing a particular job. And you may end up doing something that has little to do with your major -- I know I did. Good luck in figuring out what you want to do!

economics is little bet higher than business degree or almost the same level, it is good major for business, banks, government, and research and it is strong back ground for many other Jobs like insurance, journalism, financial so in general it is good major. you can have business degree with major in economics and that is bachelor of science(BS), economics is usually bachelor of art (PA), the courses depends on understanding no math involve may be just algebra, it may require you to do researches but it is fun. In general it is easy to get C but with more efforts you can get B.

My suggestion is to take a few english courses, such as grammar and spelling before even thinking of entering college. Perhaps a prep school would be more suitable for you, so you can obtain a sound educatiional basis for future college work.

Like justwondering has said, econ is more theoretical than practical, and it's a good co-major with engineering or accounting/finance. It's for people who want to go into business, MBA. Freshman courses in econ incl micro and macro econ (like an intro to econ), statistics, and calculus.
