The best supercar in the world, as of this moment, is the Bugatti Veyron. 1000 horsepower, and just a beautiful car. 0-60 in 2.5 seconds. Costs more than a million dollars.
The best supercar of the past is harder to figure out, but my favorite is the original Mercedes 300SL from the fifties. It was one of the first cars that you could call a supercar, and it's still a distinctive and undeniably cool vehicle. An original 300SL in good condition will sell for more than 400,000 dollars.

An impossible question to answer, I'm afraid, because the term means different things to different people.
Many so-called supercars are heavy and require very powerful engines; others being light.
Heavy supercars are not very good at ultimate road-performance.
Does a supercar include fantastic, super quality enginering, or not?
Assuming that ultimate performance is the aim, perhaps only a handful of cars really qualify, and they may not be the ones people think of first.
The Lotus 7 (now Caterham) is awesomely fast and perfectly balanced, yet has a small engine. The Metro 6R4, with a brutishly powerful V6, sophisticated four wheel drive and small size, was possibly the fastest thing ever devised for cross-country travel. Then there was the impressive Lancia Delta Integrale, the fast but fragile Lotus Esprit, the gloriously British Jaguar D and E-types ect etc.
Taking quality, performance and practical high-speed ability into account, then I can think of no better car than a Porsche 911, unless one can find a mint Porsche 959.
For those who want to turn heads, I reckon the AC-Cobra, the Ford GT40 and almost any Lamborghini would fit the bill. For the discerning, a Ferrari would be the first and last option.
See what I mean about it being an impossible question?
I think my personal choice would fall to Porsche, simply because they are honest cars with a fine engineering pedigree.

the maclaren f1 is by far the best supercar in the world, even greater than the awesome veyron. why? although the maclaren is less powerful, the car is built to race, you sit inthe middle of the cockpit, ideal compared to the veyron. its interior is basic, less is more with more buttons than a fighter jet- no fancy stereos here, the veyron's interior is luxurious and modern, u sit left/right, comfy but not the same. once you sit in the maclaren, you know of the awesome power, fact you need headphones just to keep the noise from damaging your ears!, no stereo here!! nothing beats the gull wing like doors. the veyron is just a car housing this mighty engine, i doubt it would match the maclaren on the road, being made by maclaren- race car techno know how and where they can bring the technology from there race car direct into the road version. you can't buy that type of knowledge and that precision is integrated into the car from the floor up.
in one phrase' the maclaren is basically a f1 car for the road, no more, no less...'

Porsche 959
won the Dakar rally, the toughest race in the world, and can top 190mph, most supercars cost a fortune to run and have to be babied the whole time, not the 959 which is why its my pick.

For me the car that is propbably the greatest of all time is the Land Rover. It has had a tremendous impact on the people of the world first as an instrument of war in the use of the pink panther with the SAS. but especially as the first vehicle of choice for third world aid workers, Australian out back doctors etc etc. It's perfect for the job its made for. Its rugged, reliable, easily made, CHEAP TO MAINTAIN and can be repaired simple by your local garage in the bush of Sierra Leone with parts crafted from materials found in the forest.
