I don't mean the bad popularity, like poaching, and all of the products people can make out of them, but the good kind. They've starred in movies, books, circuses, zoos, comics, plays, you name it. Oh yeah - and stuffed animals - lots of those. (I know elephants aren't really pets, but I couldn't find a better category for this!)

Being the largest land animal, they are very impressive visually, and add impact to movies, circuses, etc. They are also relatively smart and easy to train, which makes them fun to watch and somewhat predictable in their actions, fortunately.

Uniqueness. What else has ears like that? They stand like a wall, and have legs like trees. They look chubby and have a funny waddle when they walk. They have a huge nose like no other, and a cute funny thin tail that they always seem to put a bow on. Tusks are always way cool, too, and they make trumpet sounds and fountains of water and sand, and they can pick up peanuts without seeing them, and eat the shell and all. Cool. And you can ride them and they do tricks. Toy factor is great. Once you have the big nose and ears, you can draw or make the rest anyway you like and it will look good.

Another thing about elephants is they are so big that hardly anybody ever raised one or cleaned up after one. That would get old quick, but from afar, even buckets of poop look funny as heck. There was one elephant that was constipated and they gave it a laxative. The vet was smothered in the aftermath. You cannot see the picture without an involuntary smile and some words. Poop is a funny subject, but you just can't beat that one.
