First assign variable names.
Let x = textbooks, y = library books and z = phone books
Now write equations based on the info above.
There are 36 books, so
x + y + z = 36
Library books + phone books = 2 times textbooks
y + z = 2x
Textbooks + phone books = 3 times library books
x + z = 3y
Now solve for x, y and z.
Replace y+z with 2x in the first equation
x + y + z = 36 becomes
x + 2x = 36
3x = 36
x = 12
Now replace x with 12 in the second and third equations
y + z = 2x becomes
y + z = 2(12) which simplifies to
y + z = 24
x + z = 3y becomes
12 + z = 3y
Now solve the above two equations for y and z
