To change the icon of a folder, right click it, click on "Properties" at the bottom of the menu that comes up, click the "Customise" tab, click "Change Icon" at the bottom, this will show the icons in the System32 folder, if you want to use other icons, click "Browse". and go to another folder containing icons. You can convert any image to an icon by importing it into MS Paint, saving it as .bmp, go to the folder you've saved it in, click "Folder Options" in the "Tools" menu, click the "View" tab, uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types",
click "Apply", then right click the file you've saved, rename it by replacing .bmp with .ico, but make sure you make a backup copy of the original image file before you try it.
