There are many factors that cause birth defects. Firstly, the mother might be a smoker or take drugs or consume a lot of alcoholic beverages, which may contribute in having the baby to be born under-weight or to be born pre-mature, or perhaps to be born in the wrong way, where it may be necessary to have a C-section performed on the mother. Another thing that can cause birth defects are taking certain medications, which may cause this to occur. In which case you should be in constant communication with your doctor, and to discuss with him which medications to be taken.

Some are just draw of the luck...they appear regardless of how perfect you take care of yourself during pregnancy. Also these appear to have affect on the chances for birth defects:
Genetics
Foods
Alcohol
Drugs (including medicine and over the counter meds)
Environmental factors (smog, chemicals, radiation, etc)
Stress or other trauma
malnutrition
etc
Remember there are more healthy babies than those with birth defects (ratio 95% to 5% or less), so do not worry unnecessarily about your pregnancy. There is a lot that can be done for these babies nowadays, so this also is ok. Get information from the hospital, the doctor the nurse or a support group!!!

Both parties, so having kids while you are still reasonably young is a good start. But kids rearing kids, need a lot of help. So be smart if you or your partner uses drugs get clean first. Cigarettes and alcohol are the big est factors over all. Genetics, natural selection, woman are usually best at this. But nothing is certain so do what you can. Best of luck.
