Try palm trees, in your area they will thrive. Rubber plants and all ficus will definitely give a tropical aspect, but the fastest growing for that effect are perhaps the ferns. They are so easy to grow, so diverse, that you can have a garden full of nothing but ferns, hanging, on teh floor, you name it, and have your own jungle

a sago palm adds a jungle kind of touch. looks like a palm tree but grows low and full like a bush. also, palmetto leaves grow like wildfire and they provide alot of cover (like for privacy)

Elephant Ears are awesome and fast growing.
Peace Lilys are also fine choices.
