i live in the UK and we have had lots of crane flys or daddy long legs in the last couple of weeks. i know its down to the hot, wet summer summer we've had. They are annoying. You cant have any windows or doors open as they fly inside the home. They fly around lights, tv's and stick to the ceiling. I've lost count of how many I've got rid off.
Please, please can somebody tell me if they have any particular use on this planet other than being irritating. If they had a prpose oher than to breed, then die 3 days later I might be able to tolerate them a bit more.

If it's any consolation, every species that is extant today has a long evolutionary history (many of them are much older than we are) and they all "fit" in their ecosystems.
Insect pests like the ones you describe are especially adapted to take advantage of favorable conditions. Just like you describe, particularly rainy seasons suit them, and they become very abundant. While they're tiny larvae and pupae, the tipulids (crane flies) are mostly aquatic and represent a food source for many vertebrates and invertebrates, and they are important in decomposer food webs. Once they metamorphose into adults, they are food for other terrestrial animals, and during the couple of days that they are flying they might be eaten by amphibians, lizards, some birds, etc.
So you see, they have their niche, and it's not only being irritating. They don't suck blood, they don't carry diseases... In fact, that's more than what I can say about some people I know LOL!
