In general you turn it on and move it all over your face where you want to get rid of hair. The better ones adjust themselves in and out to fit over your chin and other lumps and valleys. The newest ones can be cleaned by sticking them in running water. Some even have built in dispensers for a form of shaving cream. They also come with beard/mustache trimmers. Most are rechargeable battery driven so you are not tied to a power cord while shaving.
When you buy an electric shaver there is a statement in the package saying that it takes a while for your skin to get used to the different feel of an electric shaver. They say to try it for 21 days and if you are not happy with it then send it back to them and they will refund your purchase price. It's hard to beat that as a free trial. If you don't like it you can go back to a hand razor just like your grandfather used in the days when there was nothing better.

It takes your skin 2-3 weeks to get used to an electric razor. Don't worry, just take your time while you shave and in a few weeks you'll be shaving the easiest way known to man.
I shave every other day. You can do it every day, but your skin might be irritated more often; the day between helps it heal. If you add an extra day in between, that's probably the least irritating (once, every 3 days.) But, my beard starts to get bristly, and annoying near 3 days, so I go with every other day.
I've tried both foil-screened, and rotating-head style shavers, and I seem to like the foil-screened kind better. I have a Panasonic. http://img.shopping.com/cctool/PrdImg/images/pr/177X150/00/01/34/dc/b5/20241589.JPG
I had a hard time switching over to electric, too. But, I could never shave every other day with a razor. Plus, with a razor I have to get my face wet a few minutes before I shave so it softens the hair. I understand why people say use a razor, but I don't agree with it. It's a whole production... electric's much easier.

If you are having pain when you shave, you need a new blade!! You should have little or no pain at all when you shave.
