If you consider the special rights the media has relative to other businesses should they be held criminally and financially accountable for what they produce?
If I just plain made up a story and told it to the world, and this story destroyed a person or an enterprise, and then I used the “unnamed source” to cover my BS would I get a free pass like the media does?
If that is so then I need to get my attorney to work me up an LLC that is a news media outlet so I can say whatever I want, true or not, and get a free pass.
Seriously, the continuing leaks and stories in the NYT are hurting our national security and costing us money. I would like to get together with some like minded people to see if we can get another class action suit going against them. Their stock has tanked in the past five years and I cannot believe their board has not fired everyone. Most likely it is a closely held public company. Is Fidelity dumping NYT stock due to complaints from fund owners?

I say yes, of course there is the whole freedom of speech argument you are going to hear. As you stated however, if a "layperson" were to make some of these claims, dare I say THEY would end up in court, why should the media get a free pass is beyond me....in my opinion it totally removes the "responsibility" from "responsibility in journalism".....

You must be referring to the NYT front page headline the weekend before we invaded Iraq that said Iraq has aluminum tubes for nuclear weapons.
And, how coincidentally, that Chenney, Rice, and the other Hitler wannabes, were on all the talk shows talking about mushroom clouds and crap like that.
Of course it wasn't a coincidence - it was because NYT reporter Judith Miller was leaking stuff to the paper from the White House.
Almost every leak out of Washington is leaked BY the White House.
And, should the administration be held accountable for murdering a hundred thousand innocent Iraqis and thousands of Americans.
How bad is it that Iraqis say life was better, safer, and more secure under Saddam than it is now. Same thing in Afghanistan.
Absolutely, hold the bums responsible.

I feel your pain and you make an excellent point - however, I believe that if we were to involve a small army of greedy, litigation lawyers to analyze, nit pick and launch law suits at everything from typo errors to op-eds, we would never get any news at all.
The NYT apparently feels that selling their views and agendas is more important than national security or the safety of our troops - this strategy is back firing and destroying them, and they don't even seem to know it - or care. Perhaps their "hidden" agenda isn't so hidden.
Outright libel and verifiable lies are wide open to lawsuits and retractions - unfortunately, the same isn't true of publishing sensitive information that is detrimental to our country.

You are a hero.
Yes, the News Media can lie, help our enemies, and try to destroy the USA. And get by with it. There's nothing to stop them. Treason is okay in the News Media.
My people are from the Ukraine. No one cares. Some of my family spent 20 years in Soviet Labor Camps.
During the ''HARVEST OF SORROW" the Russians deliberately staved millions of our people to death.
THE NEW YORK TIMES WAS THERE!!!!!! THE NEW YORK TIMES LIED TO AMERICA AND COVERED UP THIS GENOCIDE!!!!!!!!
I don't expect anyone to care. But PLEASE remember that the New York Times covered-up for Communist Murder.
They are not Real Americans.
God Bless the Ukraine. God Bless America.

Yes I think the media should be liable for their actions. Look at how many stories have ran, everyone jumping to conclusions, only to find out the the story is false. Reporting has become a joke, you never know who to trust.

I think the media should be responsible for their actions. I am an advocate of all our civil rights, but we still must be able to back up what we say and do.

"I would like to get together with some like minded people"
Here are some like minded people that are holding the media accountable. They use exposure and get results.
