once, i was singing and my friends said, "wow you can sing!" so i've tried singing in the shower since then, but once, i tried recording my voice on tape, and ewww it was awful.. how do i improve my singing and make it sound pretty without a professional teacher?

Yeah, everyone thinks they can sing until they record their voice and listen to it.
The first few times I tried it, I thought about just giving up cause it sounded horrible.
Then I bought a few vocal instruction books and learned from them.

The book I recommend for you is "Set your voice free" by Roger Love.
Just do a search for it and you can find it online or they will order it for you at Border's if you ask them to.

Trust me on this one, this is the best vocal book ever written and it even comes with a cd to sing along to.
It's almost like getting professional vocal lessons, for only like 20 bucks.

Try a church choir.. free instruction usually :)
A teacher is your best bet though.

learn to breath from your diaphragm, that will definitely help
