Because Minnesota had the best record of non first place teams. So thats why there the wild card team. Only one sesond place team makes the playoffs.

What you are thinking of is called the "wild card". There are 3 divisions in each league, so each division winner gets a playoff spot. After that, the team with the best record (not including the division winners) earns the wild card to make four teams in the playoffs. The Twins and the Tigers will both finish with a better record than the Angels. So, one of those teams will win the AL Central, and the other will get the wild card as the 2nd place team with the best record.

they didn't make the playoffs because of two reasons.
1) 4 games behind oakland, yet only 2 games to play.
2)true 2nd place teams get a chance in the wild card, but they are 6.5 games back of the 1st place Minnesota with 2 games to play.
both ways, they are mathematically out.

1st 2nd and 3rd place are reserved for first place teams. 4th seed is for the team with the best record that is non first place. Minnesota has a better record than the angels, as a matter of fact the best record in the wild card race. So twins are going to the playoffs.
