They have lights to use during the 45 minutes of each 90 minute orbit where they are on the night side of Earth.

Its been daytime recently so the shuttle could be watched easier for problems during takeoff. Nasa has developed better monitoring devices and will soon resume nighttime launches. One is scheduled within the next 2 months

Hi. The shuttle usually has both day and night every 90 minutes or so.
