If I own a large, successful company, and a new executive suggests that we "need more diversity", why would I want to change?

Diversity of culture, age, work background, and life experience lends itself to more creative thinking, innovation, broader perspective, an understanding of more market niches.... wow...

By reflecting the diversity of our society, you can potentially understand the needs of, and perhaps profit from, a more diverse consumer pool. Also, it's just great to recognize and appreciate the many terrific talents and values that a wide diversity of people can bring to the table. When you do so, you open the door to solutions to problems that no one in your organization would have thought of before; you open the door to new possibilities that no one in your organization would have thought of before; and you REALLY imporeve the offerings at the next company potluck!!!

I think that an successful company would want to continue being successful by having a company that mirrors society. I am sure that you do business with various types of people it just makes good business sense to have a diverse staff that would bring you all new insights.

just about everyone is gonna flip out and play both sides of the race card in here. "Diversity", in that context, is probably a PC corporate term for "racial/gender/religious diversity" Now that is only in terms of personnel to fill the same job. It's also possible that diversity can mean diversity of products/services you offer, diversity of clients you seek after, diversity of fields of research, and so on.

(notice how quickly everyone assumed you were talking about race/gender?)

speaking for every topic BESIDES people, diversity of products, etc is a good thing, as long as you can sustain the company while adding the new addition(s) it is always good to expand, just don't bite off more than you can chew.

depends on what kind of "diversity" he is suggesting.. human resource? That's a given..Production or product, this can be bitter sweet.. if you over indulge his suggestion you can find your self out on a limb in many ways..limbs break off and shareholders and boards can make for a pretty hard landing..If it is sweet then you will be a hero all the way around.. with great risk comes great rewards or medieval pain.. I...personally.. would tell Mr. Newbie to back that up.. feasibility studies, market demographics exc..

The only thing you need to change is, you need to get more diversity by firing that "new executive" and hiring someone who wants your company to succeed with the most qualified applicants, not the most colorful.

I believe "Diversity" is an old, old wooden ship, used during the Civil War era.

Because according to the law is sum1 claims that ur new buisness is racist then ur guilty until u prove ur innocence. Its a loophole to the law. U become automatically guilty untiu u show that ur not. And y wouldnt u diversify u nazi.

the cultural back round of the people you hire. you can still hire people with goo work ethic, just ask the about their favorite food. food is proven to be the backbone of cultures.
