If a boat travels 100 meters due north while the wind exerts a forece of 500 newtons towards the northeast, How much work does the wind do?

I know that work is either F.D or ||F||cos(theta)*D, but how do you know what angle "northeast" makes?

Northeast is 45 degrees east of north. Your formula ||F||cos(theta)*D should work fine.
