If you're a Met fan, you KNEW that Pedro would break down at some point during his extensive four-year contract (remember that they were the only ball club that offered him a four-year deal); it was only a matter of when. Martinez isn't the same pitcher he was several years ago, far from it. The only real losses to the Metropolitans would be mental. Getting Trachsel or Maine an extra postseason start may not be such a bad thing, either.
I seriously doubt that any team would pick up a decrepid shell-of-his-former-self pitcher for so much money, but you never know...

Wow!! Mets are in trouble! They may still be good enough to win the NL pennant but not the world series. Long term I think the Mets threw a lot of money down the drain. Pedro was never more than a 5,6, or 7 inning guy at the most. If he comes back it won't be until next June according to your information. Again, not good for the Mets. The only thing they can do is wait and see how effective he will be. If he crashes and burns the Mets may have to release him.

It's turning out as though no one wants to win the pennant in the National League. Personally I never cared for Pedro so it doesn't bother me by I think it's ashame for Willie Randolph because he has done such a great job with the Mets. I think in the end whoever wins in the American League will win the world series anyway. The Mets sure did spend a lot of money on a guy who never seems to go an entire season without being hurt in some way. Overrated!!

I thought it was only his leg that was giving him problems. Mets fans must be crying in their beer. Oh well, hope the Mets learned something from this. Never sell the farm for a guy who spends more than his share of time on the DL. Martinez is so overrated it isn't funny. Keep him on the team and use him as a relief pitcher from now on. Hell he never pitches more than 5 innings an outing anyway!!!

I think the Mets will be quite alright without him. They've won games without him so he's not the sole key to winning games. It's still sad to see him not playing for that long, though. After the surgery, I think it'll be quite hard for him to find his rhythm again. He'll be out for (at least) eight months for pete's sake. But, because of the contract, I think he'll be around for the next season. Finally, for all of u Pedro haters, screw u all!!! He'd done good for the Mets before the injury kicked in and don't think that u people are the only ones who are upset about his injury.

Pedro has been average the entire second half as usual. The mets probably will get to the world series, fairly easily. El Duque will pitch twice is what the Randolph decided. The mets still have to pay him fro 2 more years so they are stuck with him.

How is it that I can't seem to shed a tear for the guy who likes to push around old men??? The only down side to this story is that the Yankees won't have the pleasure of pounding this slug into the ground during the world series. What goes around comes around. The Mets have spent a fortune on this part time pitcher and would be better served if they buy out his contract and move on. He is always hurt and usually never gives you a complete game when he's so called healthy. If they don't buy him out just stick him in the bullpen. He might actually make a decent middle man for Wagner. At least they would get part of their investment back.

It doesn't matter. What has Martinez done for the Mets this year anyway?? He's only good for 50 to 60 pitches a game and he's all tired out!! He's nothing but a legion in his own mind.

What it means is Steve Trachsel is now the ace of the staff. I don't like their chances to go far this postseason. Not when you look at the pitching of teams like St. Louis, Houston, LA and San Diego.
Pedro's trade value has never been lower. The Mets just have to wait and see, he'll be back by June.

Misery loves company...As a Yankees fan,I'm not happy about the possibility of Johnson missing the postseason due to a herniated disc in his back.
