Where do you live? In California you go to the local courthouse, file a petition with the clerk, run the public notice in the newspaper for 4 consecutive weeks, go to court and tell the judge why you want to change your name, and he will decide if you can do so legally. Will cost you around $330 to file with the clerk of the court and then $50 to $400 to run the notice depending on which publication you choose.

In one place you fill out a form and pay a small fee, and in another place you have to petition the court, which is about as complicated as protesting a parking ticket. It only gets expensive if you are persuaded you need a lawyer. You aren't even charged with a parking meter violation, you're almost certain to get what you ask for, and if you don't, nothing changes. Leave the lawyer out of it.

Name changes are generally allowed by all states. The place to go is your local county Probate Court. The costs vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction and can be more costly if a lawyer is involved. Chck your web page for your county and state for more information.
