It depends on the state. In the state of Missouri you can get Vocational Rehab. and help with financial obligations and college costs IF a person has gone through rehab and remains clean/sober.
In this state many counselors are in recovery and are excellent substance abuse counselors. I guess one issue would be if it was a felon or a misdem. and if you were on probation or parole.
The best way to find out in your state is to call the Dept of Mental Health to find out what the laws are. Also contact the Dept of Secondary Education should be able to answer all those questions. Good luck. Counseling is a very stressful field so if you're not stable in recovery you could have problems.GOOD LUCK

If you are asking that question from a moral point of view...I would need more information on what the drug charge was...if you are asking from a legal point of view...it would depend on what state you live in..many states licensing boards will not grant a license to a convicted felon...so if you wanted to be licensed as a social worker, or a nurse, or physician, etc...you might be caught. check the state's licensing agency.

noone should be limited on furthering their education, no matter their past (as long as debt to society has been paid).

No, especially if what you want to do is drug counseling. But it may not be as it should. Good luck!
