I have hives pretty bad and benadryl is the only thing that seems to hold off the bad rashes & swelling... the Benadryl says consult a physician if taking for more then 24 hrs but I'm wondering if that's just precautionary. It's saturday, i'd rather wait til Monday to go to the dr. but I have to take the benadryl other wise i get very splotchy and swollen! So far it's the only thing that works.

Generally speaking no....that is why the stuff comes in packages of up to 48 pills each! Allergies do not go away in 24 hours....some people are stuck with them for life.

You should consult a physician because allergic reactions can be fatal in certain instances. It's not because the drug is dangerous.

Take it until you can get in to see your doctor but do not go over the recommended two tablets every 4-6 hours. But I would get into see the doctor ASAP. Find out what the rash is from. The benedryl will not hurt you until then. Good luck.

It is safe to take Benadryl longer than 24 hrs. However it is not safe to take more than recommend dosage. Emergency Rooms are available, if you feel you need treatment or different medication prior to seeing your regular Doctor Monday.

Try the topical ointment (benedryl cream) on the hives if you're concerned about the oral form.
