That it was a group of rats with their tails stuck together. I forgot about it, until I read the Amazing Maurice by Terry Pratchett in which he mentions one.
Is rhere such a thing and how does it happen?

I found some information regarding "King Rat." It does not appear based on what I was reading there that this is an actual type of rat that really exists but a fictional creation.

Skeletons of 12 and more of these together have been found. Nobody knows how it actually happens, but it is assumed in an eating frenzy they somehow get tied together - but it is strange how they're always in the same positions when tied.

it is anything from 3 or more rats tied together by their tails. the harder to try and pull themselves apart the tighter they become joined

Not particularly animal freindly but if your only fun was a hoop and a stick i suppose it sounds like fun. :/
