Anything will do - a sideboard or dresser that is about the right height backwise would be fine. Fold over some towels/baby blankets to make it comfy. Just make sure you hold baby at all times (have everything you need to hand), so that he doesn't fall back/off. Or else you could sit on a bed and do it there. Fancy furniture completely unnecessary!

We made a changing mat (baby plastic covering a thin piece of foam) and put it on the dining table - can work on a kitchen counter too - both these are higher than an average bed and so are easier on your back. You need to make the mat big enough so that yukky stuff doesn't get on the dining table, of course you can clean it off, but the idea isn't very nice! The plastic mat can easily be wiped/washed.

Lay a changing pad down on your bed and sit on the bed to change the baby. I have a terrible bad back and this is what I have always done. Just put the diaper bag right there on the bed, the changing pad, and the baby. Sit down, and get to work. It's easy as pie, and painless.

No changing furniture needed. Kneel on the floor, or put the child on a table or work-top, whatever suits your height best.

You must buy some fancy changing furniture if you want to avoid hurting your back.

Your kitchen counter should be the right height for this job. Lay a towel or blanket down first.
