I think the core difference is Republicans weight self-help, where Democrats weight social programs.

The way it works: taxes become unpopular when it becomes increasingly difficult to pay the bills - we vote republican. Taxes become popular when the gap between rich and poor widens (this probably takes more time to recognize). - we vote Democrats.

Currently, we are seeing this gap widen and jealously is beginning to set in, so the public will start to move towards the Democrat party and social programs. If the Democrats burden the public with taxes, the public will move back towards the GOP.

Republicans believe low taxes keep the money circulating within the business community, which will then grow and employ more people, thereby giving every person able to work an opportunity to support themselves. At this point in history they are also trying to legislate conservative christian morality.

Democrats believe that business and the wealthy should pay higher taxes so the government can give the money to those without jobs, so they don't have to work. Democrats are more liberal when in comes to giving rights to everyone.

There ought to be a third party with clear thinking.

Core difference is that a democrats answer for every problem is the government. What more can the government do to solve this issue?

A conservative republican, in contrast, believes that the private sector should and will meet the needs of the society. Many current republicans have adopted the spending mentality of the democrats...except these republicans run up a deficit instead of increasing taxes.

The definition has been spun by the political spinners for so long now nobody knows what's going on. In the early 1900's the two parties platforms basically flipped.. This is why I have to chuckle when current Republicans point to Lincoln and so on.

I would suggest everyone who is politically polarized in this country (which often feels like nearly everyone) look the words up in the dictionary and thesarus along with words like Christian, Catholic, catholic, liberal, conservative.

It's quite facinating.

Generally speaking the Republican Party are right-wing (like the Conservative Party in the UK) and Democrats left-wing (Labour).

The best way to understand them is to look at their views on particular hotbead issues such as abortion etc..

abortion: Republicans are pro life / Democrats are pro choice

the core difference is government size. Dem's believe government should have more control over pretty much everything and Reps believe in smaller government with more control in the privet sector. that's the theory anyway

The difference is that democrats are liberals; they're more pro-abortion and endorse gay marriages. Republicans are more Conservative in their believes, valuing the traditional restricted way of life.

The demo.'s believe that the government should do everything for the public. That is why we have "Give-Away" programs, so many taxes, and so many people working for the Government. One Congress man had 6 secretaries. Example: Secretary to the Congressman, 1st Secretary to the congressman's main secretary,2Nd Secretary to the congressman's 1st secretary, 3rd Secretary to the congressman's 2Nd secretary, and so on. Their Motto is: Let's Give, Give, Give; not matter what the cost.

leterbuck's answer would have been correct in the past, but the biggest-spending presidents in history have been Reagan and Bush. They no longer stand for small government like they used to, though many in their party dislike the new trend of 'big government conservatives'.

Looking on from the UK; Politically there's not a lot of difference-but on a personal level, the republicans seem to be mentally ill.
