A few years ago I read that spreading used fresh coffe grounds on the soil around precious plant helped to deter cats from using the garden as a toilet (they don't like the bitter taste when licking their paws).

I did this and found that it also put off the slugs and snails so there was a result!! I garden in a small plot and have lots of pots and tubs and find that used coffee grounds work against slugs and snails, plus it's better than trying to flush them down the sink!

Natural Snail Repellent

There are several good options. All work, some are more temporary than others.

1. Diatomaceous Earth... sold in aquarium shops for filtering systems. DE is the calcium shells of tiny marine organisms. The shells have very sharp edges and the snails and slugs won't cross it. Sprinkle it in a circle around your plants and over the leaves to kill snails already on the plants. DE is also sold in garden shops. Not cheap, but very long lasting.

2. Beer. Set it in dishes at the base of your plants. Slugs and snails love it and will drown in the beer. Must be replaced often.

3. Builder's Sand. Like DE, has sharp edges, but is not as effective as DE. Less expensive though. Don't use baby sand, it's too fine and soft.

4. Salt. Use Kosher, large grained salt. Does not last past the first rain or watering because it melts.

Repellent...natural...??? No not any natural repellents , but I do know that they are attracted to beer. If you put beer in a bucket ( or any container that holds water ) than at night the snails go in and then drown in the beer, ( put about an inch of beer ) and the more surface"the bigger the bucket bottom is " the more snails will drown , and the more drowned snails mean the less snails will eat your plants!!!

Put a saucer in the garden with ur plants and pour a bit of beer in it. The snails r attracted 2 the alcohol & they get smashed & die of alcohol poisoning!!!!! I'm serious by the way, I've been a professional gardener 4 over ten yrs.

This is really gross and kind of cruel. My brother used to do this all the time and I did this once when I was like 10 or 12 but someone had told me about dumping salt on a snail and it will kill them. But, not just kill them they will actually sit there and dissolve. It seems very mean to me now but I was curious about if it would work when someone at school told me about it and it does work!!

I hear egg shells and all that rough stuff but the snail and slug killer is really the best. I used to buy some stuff at Del-Cur Supply on the Oregon and California border on Highway 101.

You can put sharp little rocks or pieces of pottery around the plants they eat to keep them away or you can use beer in a jar lid and they will drink themselves to death. Its best to put the little remains in a plastic bag and tie it up since if its a female and has eggs those babies could come back the next year - lots more.

Dried, crushed eggshells work for slugs, so I am sure they'd also work for snails. I've also heard, but not yet tried, diatamacious (sp??) earth.

Try diatomaceous earth, it has tiny sharp edges and is readily available at any home improvement store or nursery
