They all pronounce it like NOTER DAME, but it's supposed to be like NOTRA DAAM, ya know? I don't know if I'm describing the sound good enough... But anyway they pronounce it wrong, WHY?

Maybe it's cuz they don't recognize the fact that they're French words.

It isn't that people are pronouncing it wrong it depends on which part of the country you are in. Such as people in the North East enunciate their "R"s much more than people in the west, and people in the south have a southern drawl. It all depends on which region you live in is how people pronounce things. Such as those who live in Great Britian they speak with an accent yet they say that us American's do.

Next time listen to the way people sound and you will understand why some people will pronounce the word "wash" like "warsh" or "born" like "burn"

The football team is "Noder Dayme" But the true french pronunciation, of course, is Notra Dahm or correctly spelt, Notre Dame - which, as everybody knows (don't they?) means "Our Lady"

I was born and raised in the U.S. midwest and have always pronounced it "Notra Daam" as you spell it.

Many words of foreign origin are pronounced differently in the US or any other country for that matter.

Why worry about it?

Although it is fun to ask my friend from England to pronounce 'aluminum.' lol

I don't know what you are talking about because everyone I know pronounces it "notra dam". Besides what's the big deal anyway? Leave it to a chick to even think of a question like this! Why don't you ask some dog or cat questions, or maybe something on women's health, or maybe a few makeup or fashion questions.

at first i thought it was because most americans are ignorant of french pronounciations, but then i realized that a college is named Notre Dame. a lot people know Notre Dame for their football team, and you know how stupid football players are.

When we say Noter Dame that means we are referring to the college in South Bend Indiana. However if we say NOTRA DAAM we are referring to that landmark in europe. This is how we denote which we are referring too
