Tchaikovsky wrote some of the most emotional pieces in classical music. His music is an unrestrained outpouring of emotion, fountain of beautiful melodies, and possess a strong immediate appeal. Some people have called him too emotional, too sentimental, soppy, a bit like soap opera... No matter. If you like him, you like him. But you have been warned.
Tchaikovsky:
- Piano Concerto No. 1 in B Flat Minor
- Symphony No. 4 in F Minor
- Symphony No. 5 in E Minor
- Symphony No. 6 in B Minor, "Pathetique"
Rachmaninoff is another Russian composer worth trying out. His music is very melancholic and can be depressing to sensitive souls. The brand of melancholy in his music is very special, can not be described in words... But you will often see people saying that certain pieces have a "Rachmaninoff melancholy" or something like that. His piano concertos are his most popular works.
Rachmaninov:
- Piano Concerto No. 1 in F Sharp Minor
- Piano Concerto No. 2 in C Minor (the most popular)
- Piano Concerto No. 3 in D Minor
- Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Minor
- Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini for Piano and Orchestra
Believe the hype.
Chopin is the master of the piano. The Nocturnes are all sad and emotional. Op. 48 onwards is somewhat more difficult listening than the previous ones. The early nocturnes, such as Op. 9, is strongly flavoured by a somewhat naive sentimentality, while his late ones (Op. 62 especially) have a certain otherworldly tranquility about them.
Chopin:
- All the nocturnes (My favourites are Op. 37/2, Op. 48/1, Op. 55/1, Op. 62/1, Op. 62/2. The most popular piece is Op. 9/2).
- Piano Sonata No. 3 in B Minor (3rd movement esp.)
- Piano Concerto No. 1 in E Minor (2nd movement esp.)
- Piano Concerto No. 2 in F Minor (2nd movement esp.)
Someone mentioned Ravel. Yes, personally I think Ravel wrote some very beautiful works which can express sadness. But his is a curiously different style. He often demonstrates a certain calm "coolness" and a sense of emotional detachment in his works, yet this detachment has managed to evoke very tender and poignant spareness... It's very hard to describe. But the proof is in listening - listen, say, to the solo piano writing in the Piano Concerto for Left Hand and you will know what I mean.
Ravel:
- Piano Concerto in G Major (2nd movement esp.)
- Piano Concerto in D Major for Left Hand
- Pavane for a Dead Princess
Have fun exploring.
