There are an extremely high amount of exceptions to that spelling "rule". The "i" before "e" idea should be scrapped and never taught again.
Don't you agree?

Well, i mean "i" before "e" except after "c". I'll find examples of exceptions.

Um... because the entire rhyme is usually accurate and does help.

I before E except after C, or in sounding like AY as in neighbor and weigh.

Helps me -- I've remembered it my entire life, and it still comes in handy.

Here's an idea -- let the learner decide what tools are helpful and which are not.

Sir -- it matters not what exceptions there are. There are indeed exceptions to every rule. The point -- the KEY point -- is that it can be helpful and you should let the LEARNER decide what is helpful and what is not. It's getting very tiresome trying to help teachers understand that LEARNERS ultimately create and control their own learning. Give them tools, let them explore, and let THEM decide what's helpful and what is not...because ultimately they will, whether you want them to or not.

That's the problem with the English language.....there are so many exeptions to the rule. However, this one has helped me. I still use it today and I've been out of school for 10 years!

I agree with the first answer. If you use the entire rhyme, it is accurate.

Why do you have to ask stupid questions when it is obvious from all of your answers you already know the right answer?
