A simple answer, really: The proposal should come from the one who wants to propose. Some guys might prefer to do the asking when they're "ready" and might not say "yes" quite as quickly. It's just a mental quirk with men, I think -- probably has to do with that giving-up-the-freedom thing. But be assured that other guys find a willingness to propose to be very appealing in a woman. I've always felt that one of the most attractive things about a woman can be just knowing that she's really into you in a big way. There's no reason to stand on tradition these days, I think, as long as the asker -- whether male or female -- is prepared to deal with the outcome, whatever it might be, with understanding and patience. That part, too, can be very important -- and sometimes well worth the effort.

It all depends Im a fan of the girl proposing because its different from normal. Usually the guy proposes. Just make sure you both feel the same way about each other first.

Yes. The guy OR the girl.

It's really hard for them to do it simultaneously since one of them would have to PROPOSE the idea of a simultaneous proposal beforehand and this 'proposal' might technically be considered a 'Proposal'.

Also...if you really believe in 'love' why are you so concerned about Society's customs? Follow your heart...

My wife proposed to me cause I was to shy too. I wanted to take her out west on a trip. She said that the only way she would go was if I married her. So I did and we went out west and we have been together for a looooog time !! Best move I ever made.

I am not much on tradition, but in case of marriage, I think its the man's job.

But she can bring the subject up and make clear she is in favor of it.

Then the ball is in his court and even though it was she that really proposed he HAS to do the bended knee thing and whip out the ring and ask in his puppy voice "will you marry me {fill in name here}.

Those are the rules! And he picks out the ring. And then they go to the store together and get the one she likes more.

if it's a leap year the girl can by intergalactic law propose but a gentleman would not let her do this as to avoid the embarrassment of a refusal

as far as the American tradition goes, i believe it is men's job however nowadays i have been also hearing that some women are taking this tradition on their own hand and proposing to their partner first ...personally i think it really doesn't matter.
