Emergency contraception:
The morning-after pill
What is it?
Emergency contraception (also known as the morning-after pill) is a high dosage of the birth control pill. It is recommended to be used after sexual intercourse, over a period of 72 hours, to achieve the goal of preventing (or ending) pregnancy. There are three different ways birth control pills are currently being promoted for this use: progesterone alone, estrogen alone, or both of these artificial steroids together.
These are the same steroids found in the typical birth control pill.
Where did this idea come from?
The idea of emergency contraception—or a morning-after pill—is based on a theory. Under this theory, if a woman has sexual intercourse and fears she may be pregnant, she can take large doses of birth control pills. If in fact the woman is pregnant when she takes these birth control pills, the high dosage could act to kill her preborn child—a living human being. The only "emergency" in this case is the woman's fear of being pregnant.
There are at least two formulations of the birth control pill that are being marketed as "emergency contraceptives." Also, double doses (or more) of existing birth control pills are also prescribed (or self- administered) as "emergency contraception." Though no testing has been done to confirm the safety of these large doses of birth control pills for women (and very limited testing has been done on the specifically marketed "morning-after" pills), the Food and Drug Administration has approved this use.
How do emergency contraception/morning-after pills work?
The emergency contraceptive/morning-after pill has three possible ways in which it can work (as does the regular birth control pill):
Ovulation is inhibited, meaning the egg will not be released;
The normal menstrual cycle is altered, delaying ovulation; or
It can irritate the lining of the uterus so that if the first and second actions fail, and the woman does become pregnant, the human being created will die before he or she can actually attach to the lining of the uterus.
In other words, if the third action occurs, her body rejects the living human embryo, and the child will die. This result is a chemical abortion. (Abortion is an act of direct killing that takes the life of a living preborn human being—a life that begins at fertilization.)
Is it safe?
Here are some of the side effects:
nausea
vomiting
infertility
breast tenderness
ectopic pregnancy (can be life threatening)
blood clot formation
Emergency contraception also offers no protection against sexually transmitted diseases including AIDS.
There are no long term studies to show whether women will be permanently damaged, or risk such diseases as cancer, from these chemicals being given in such high doses.
After this consider getting on birth control and using condoms

Sorry to say this to you, being only 14, but you should NOT be having sex at such an age! Do you have sex ed at school, do you know what contraception is? Are you aware of VD and the other risks of sex - protected or otherwise?
Sex is more than an act to please you or the other party my dear. There are emotional and physical risks, which you are obviously NOT aware of.
Speak to a guidance councellor or doctor, do NOT ask a bunch of folk you have never met such an important question! I hope for your sake that you ARE NOT pregnant.
By the way, the morning after pill, does not ALWAYS work!!!

You can take it straight away but up to a maximum of 72 hours after sex. The sooner you take it the more effective. It is unlikely that it will be given to you by your regular doctor without an adult there as you are below the age of consent. Boots sell it too but if they think you are too young they may not sell it to you. If you live in the UK maybe you should try contacting the Brook Advisory Clinic to see if they can help.
But sweetie what are you doing having sex at your age? Don't do it honey. Wait till you are older. Enjoy being young, don't try to grow up to quickly.
Remember it's not only pregnancy you have to worry about. There are sexually transmitted diseases to consider too. I would suggest in addition to the morning after pill you also get tested to give yourself a clean slate and then stop having sex.
If you really can't give sex up then please make sure you use condoms. If a guy wont then he doesn't respect you. Please be careful. Sex isn't worth the life sentence of a baby or worse at your age.
Take care and good luck.
ps. If you need any more advice please feel free to email me.

There is a great website out that will help you with emergency contraception information. It is
www.ec.princeton.edu/. There is a lot of info on this site. However as someone already pointed out this is not birth control and not the method you should be using by any means. If your not prepared to act responsibly do not have sex no matter how much he pressures you. I have heard every excuse from, " If does not feel as good with a condom, or I will pull out just in time you wont get pregnant." Their is no just in time and dying does not feel good either. So please wake up and remember your 14 years of age do not waste your youth trying to raise a child, when you have so many things to offer this world, and for all you that think that is a knock against motherhood, its not. Motherhood however is something you should plan and prepare for and she hasn't had time to do that yet.

Some 48 hours after. Some 72 hours after. See a pharmacist. Then go to family planning clinic and get a contraceptive pill - it's much better for your health. It takes two - ask the guy to wear a raincoat!

I am not trying to be rude..so plz dont take this in a neg. way...but just remember this...if you are not old enough or dont feel mature enough to bring a baby into this world then you shouldnt be having sex and if you do you should take up the responsibility of making the guy use a condom and get on birth control pill....the morning after pill....isnt called the MORNING after pill for nothing sweetie...plz. think before you do something like this again..your only 14..wait til your older to explore that sexual option...focus on being a 14 year old...your only a child once..so enjoy it while it lasts.

Up to 72 hours, but the earlier you take it the more effective it is.
Either go to your family planning clinic where you can get it, or pop along to the pharmacy (e.g Boots) where you can buy it over the counter. Beware, buying it in a pharmacy is a bit expensive expect to pay about £20, at the family planning clinic it should be free.
I have taken this pill twice in ten years, and never had a side effect and always found it easy to obtain and take so don't worry.
