They were painted white about 4 years ago. I keep them clean and do not smoke in the house. It was Laura Ashley paint from Lowes, not a cheap paint.

White alkyd paint (commonly called "oil based") usually turns yellowish over time. Also as mentioned by previous writer, maybe the original color is starting to show through---especially if it was a stain. It should have had a couple of coats of primer/undercoat before painting.

Plain white vinegar diluted with water, 1:4. If you have an emptry spray bottle, put the solution in there and then just spray and wipe down with a rag. It will work beautifully.

Test it on an inconspicuous spot first, to make sure that it doesn't harm the paint finish (it shouldn't).

Don't be afraid of lingering odor from the vinegar, it will be gone in no time. You can light a candle if it bothers you.

hth!

Propane gas heat will yellow anything in the house. Cooking grease may yellow the paint in the kitchen.
Next time you buy white paint, ask the mixer to add a few drops of blue.
This is supposed to keep the paint looking whiter, longer.

If they were stained white, they were never sealed causing them to turn yellow. You will have to re-stain them white, making sure to seal them. You might be able to sand the top coat off (the yellow part) and seal them with a wood or stain sealer from loews, home depot, or any hardwear store. :0 good luck!
