Yes, a helmet can save your life if you have an accident and your head connects with something. The helmet is only meant to be part of the solution though - you should wear knee and elbow pads as well.

It makes it a bit easier to find your brains and gives you something to scoop them into to get them off the road so the rest of us can drive our cars and not get any grey-matter on our nice paint-jobs!!!
