If you had given us the year ,make and model plus the miles on it you could be assisted much more but here goes,if it is a high mile engine you have to try first to see if the oil you are using has viscosity problems at start up. keep in mind that your lifters are the last thing that is lubricated ,so if your car does not have proper lubrication you will develop that ticking noise,I changed her oil to a full synthetic brand and the noise went away, the car she had was a Nissan maxima with 143.000 miles, sometimes you can just be lucky and save some costly repairs, she is still driving it and using high octane gas for better engine life, you may try this before doing any expensive repairs, good luck.
