If my motherboard has 6 sata drive sockets do these have to be used solely for hard drives or can sata cd/dvd drives be used?

Also is there any real advantage of upgrading the existing ide drives other than better air flow in the case?

I haven't found any advantage worth buying SATA to replace IDE drives if you already have IDE drives installed. Also have never seen a real SATA cdrom device installed yet, all our PC's use IDE for the CD.

They do make SATA CD/DVD drives, although they are still very few now and very expensive. As for advantages, SATA is faster, although you will not notice, my advice is don't bother upgrading your old computer to SATA, you can wait until you buy a new one.

sata transfers information faster then ide, so it will be better to use sata instead of ide, but i have never seen a cd/dvd drive that connects to sata

SATA connections can be used by any SATA item.
