well it doesnt have the shape of a ladybug, just that we only see them around the same time of year (late september til first frost) in the chicago area (particularly in the suburbs west of chicago). they have an elongated body, are completey black except for an orange 'V' on its back. they love the sunny sides of biuldings.

can anyone tell me what they are and how to get rid of them?

Boxelder bug or boxelder beetle have many different markings, but sometimes they look like a V shape in orange or red on their backs.

A contact insecticide is usually used.
