what do i have to do to it to use untreated pine in an outside semi-protected position?

Paint it with some kind of creosote or woodstain, even waxed would protect it. Lots of products on UK market, imagine US would be the same.

Chemical treat it for ant proofing and paint it for water proofing.
Other wise you will have to do the hole job again every year.

Treat it with coppertox, that is what is use on wooden skiffs.
