The definition of a "racist" is "Someone who is winning an argument against a liberal".
You raise some good points. The fact is, most republicans are conservative. Most conservatives are mature, sensible people who realize the limits of human nature and the limits of big government.
We tend to understand that lines must be drawn somewhere, and not everyone is a productive citizen. Those ideals tend to attract accusations of "racism" from liberals, who resort to name-calling when they're losing an argument.

I'm not sure you who mean by "they." I'm a liberal Democrat, but I certainly don't think Republicans are racist. There may be some who are, but I'm fairly sure that there are also some democrats who are.
In the past, people were racist because they didn't know any better. Racist people existed in every political party. Today, we know better, but some people continue to hold on to their racist beliefs.
I think the biggest issue with racism today is not that people are intentionally racist. I think that most people have some form of racial bias, and it often goes unrecognized. Until we recognize the problem, we can't solve it. And I'm not saying this from a moral high ground - I know that I have racial bias and I'm working to overcome it before it turns into blatant racism.
There have been allusions to President Bush being like Hitler, for a few reasons. One, Bush seems to be anti-Arab: all people in the Middle East, to him, are terrorists. That is racist; however, it does not constitute the beliefs of the majority of Republicans (at least I hope not). Two, Bush rules by fear: if we don't follow him, he claims, there will be another terrorist attack. Hitler did that same thing: he made the people believe that they had a need to fear the Jews, when he was really making the whole thing up in his head. However, Bush is not Hitler, and even though I don't agree with the Iraq war, that doesn't make it another Holocaust.
So next time you ask a question like this, please be more specific. Just because some people say that some Republicans are racist does not mean that everyone thinks that, or that it's true of all Republicans. (For example, I could say that some Democrats have brown hair while some Republicans have red hair: but that doesn't mean that all red-haired people are Republicans while brown-haired people are Democrats. That's just silly!)

Because they created and enforced Jim Crow laws for over a hundred years after a few former slaves had the nerve to get elected to Congress. No....wait! That was the Democrats! In fact, it was a Republican president who had to send troops down south to get Democrat governors out of the doorways of schools. So, I don't know why they call Republicans racist except, maybe, they're ashamed of THEIR racist past and they are trying to deflect the truth, like usual, and convince people it was someone else.

It is unfortunate that Republicans have allowed themselves to be tarred with the racist label. As you are aware, the Republican party was founded as the anti-slavery party, Republicans marched in Selma, Al while the Dixiecrats leveled water cannons at the protesters. However, the 'racist' label is an effective tool to shout down an opponent. Anyone who tries to say "I'm not a racist", seems guilty. Wouldn't you agree?

well... the trick is... the main slave holders in the south were conservative (conservative dems, but CONSERVATIVE)... the democratic party was the conservative party back then... and the Republicans was the liberal party...promoting civil rights...
then everything got all topsy turvy in the 60s and 70s...
but I still don't think that Republicans are racists though... there are members of both parties that are racists....

It's known as a canard. Liberals tend to be weak-willed, selfdepricating members of a group mind. They "feel" that since they have no true morally-positive convictions, calling someone a bad name will naturally slander them and make them cower in fear. Luckily, most people are getting sick of the lies and name-calling.

It. is a lie perpetuated by the left. The Democrats fought against the original civil rights, then saw the political advantage of the black vote. They distorted the facts and have stood by their story since. The stupid still beleive it is true.
Senator Robert C. byrd of West Virginia was a Grand Master of the KKK.

What fantasy world do you live in? Conservatives mainly kept slaves and lived in the south. Not saying they were Republican or Democrat, but they were resistant to change. The KKK was not necessarily a Democrat or Republican organization. Liberals in the North, and President Lincoln (who was also a liberal man) were fighting against the oppression. You need to stop getting your facts from biased people and do the research. It's for your own good.

The sides have changed. The Old Dixicrats who fully supported the KKK are now in the rank and file of the GOP. The demographics have changed.
