You could answer this in one of two ways. The obvious way would be to list ten events of obvious world importance; the other would be to list ten events on a specific theme, eg advances in technology, developments in popular music, or political crises that shaped the 20th Century.

To give it perhaps a different slant, what about 10 events since 1900 that have shaped Britain and its role in the world? I would summarise these as follows:

1914. Outbreak of World War One, and British acceptance of a wartime 'Continental Commitment'.

1922. Washington Conference, where the UK accepted it could no longer afford to maintain a position as the world's strongest naval power.

1926. General Strike in Britain. This shaped attitudes amongst the Unions and the Employers for much of the next 50 years.

1939. Outbreak of World War Two. British acceptance of a continental commitment once again.

1940. Rescue of the British Expeditionary Force from Dunkirk (May-June) and the Battle of Britain (July-October). Pivotal events in the military sense in 1940, and they have shaped how we perceived ourselves ever since.

1942. Publication of the Beveridge Report, which paved the way for the creation of the National Health Service in 1948. Long seen as the highest moral point in British social policy during the 20th Century.

1947. Independence of India. Beginning of the break-up of the British Empire, which was effectively completed by 1970.

1956. Anglo-French invasion of Egypt to seize the Suez Canal. Condemned as the aggressors by world opinion, the UK and France were forced to end the venutre by US diplomatic and military pressure. This was the first clear sign that Britain's position and role in the world had diminished, particularly compared to the USA.

1963. Profumo scandal. Played a very large part in ending the deferential society, in which the authorities and upper classes were perceived as 'betters' or 'superiors'.

1967. The Summer of Love, typified by the Beatles's releas eof the album 'Sergeant Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. This was a high point musically and culturally. Its parallel was the Wilson Government's changes to social legislation between 1965 and 1968, in which the death penalty was abolished, abortion was legalised, divorce was made easier, the age of consent reduced to 18, and homosexuality was decriminalised.

Just some thoughts, and I have no doubt that someone will criticise this for being too parochial and specific to the UK.

You could also think about the 'Winter of Discontent' in 1978-79, which shaped the UK's political attitudes and landscape for 20 years; Britain's successful liberation of the Falklands in 1982; and the death of Princess Diana in 1997 and the nationwide reaction to it. As I say, just a few ideas.
