to be an actual professor, you almost always require a PhD. (doctorate of philosophy). many college instructors are not actually professors but rather instructors who only have a B.A. or a Masters degree. so from this, a professor would also be a Doctor because he received a doctorate. technically, lawyers also receive a doctorate but no one refers to them as doctors. so, I'd say that a professor and a doctor are the same thing, unless of course you mean a medical doctor.

A Professor is higher up than a Doctor

A Professor has a higher rank/status. But, a doctor earns more money if he's really good. Plus, there's always jobs available for doctors, but, a job as a professor in an academic field might be harder to find.

That depends on whether or not you want to learn something or get cured of something.

As a profession, I have never (ever) had a desire to be a medical doctor. However, the time I've spent as a college professor was the most rewarding and exciting of my life.

To answer you question in a third way, a Professor has a PhD -- which is considered a higher degree than the MD. As a reward, we get to wear cool felt tam hats at graduations, while MDs have to wear those stiff mortarboards.

Depends if you want something professing or doctoring?

I'm not sure if you're asking which is a more reputable occupation, or which is a higher academic rank.
To answer the first, neither is better.
To answer the second, not all doctorate holders are professors, but you'd be hard pressed to find a professor without a doctorate.

A professor is of higher status than a doctor however a doctorate is the highest academic award you can study for. A professorship is an honorary title awarded by a university. You cannot take it as a course.

If you need a medic, then I would go for the Doctor.

Otherwise, a qualified Ph.D. student is a Doctor, while a Professor is the head of a department, while a Dean is head of a school.

A professor is a doctor with more degrees and trains other doctors in specialist skills.
