i would check the power supply, maybe the power supply that came with your hp will not support your new hardware

HP computers have what is called a "tattoo" identifying the system on the motherboard and a DMI written to the hard drive. HP system restore disks check that the DMI information matches the information on the CD. When you replace the motherboard, you need to tattoo it. There's a label on the bottom of the computer with the information that's needed for the tattoo, but I don't know if you have to be an HP tech to be allowed to get the tattoo and HDD DMI programs. Contact HP support to find out where you can get them.

Enter Bios
Set PC to boot from CD-Rom not Harddrive (priority order)
Insert your XP CD in CD-Rom
Start Installation

If you went that far, a new hard drive isn't going to break the bank. Get a larger one and install it as the "master" on the jumper settings and load your new copy of XP and your mobo drivers to it. You'd still have to change the BIOS boot order, you want to boot from your CD or DVD drive. Once XP is on your new drive, you could format the old drive for a second hard drive with the jumper set to the "slave" position.

Yes it should recognize it. You might have to go to setup and choose to load off of the CD-ROM drive if it doesn't load the CD but it should.
