The only problem I have with AA type help is that they approach it from a "you can never drink again" stand point. That is true for some people, but not for everyone. There are other programs which teach the difference between a lapse and a relapse. With AA's approach if you slip and have one drink you say "What the heck...I have screwed up so I might as well have a case." The other type of counseling may actually take you to a bar (or where ever you drink) and have ONE drink with you and teach you how to leave. Some people can do this, though some need abstinence. They don't guilt you or shame you if you can learn to drink responsibly at some point in the future.

I think it's great you taking a stand for you own health. Good for you.

Stopping drinking can be a really hard process and you need to have the best support system you can for that. Some people like Alcoholic Anonymous, some don't. Some people think a therapist helps, others don't. I think you need to think about your own drinking, what makes you drink, and what you can do to stop yourself in those senarios. For example, if you have a really shitty day at work, it might be a reason to drink. So having a support system like going to an AA meeting, or visiting a friend might help stop you from drinking.

However, it's gotta be what works for you, not everyone else or someone you know who has stopped drinking. Don't get discouraged too if it's difficult. It might take a couple of tries. I wish you the best of luck!!

Hello there you will need professional help,as if you suddenly stop drinking you could have a fit,you will also need drugs to help you come of the drink as you can't go cold turkey on this,as i've been there got the Tshirt etc and it's the best thing i have ever done,as i now have my life back and i'am rid of the pure hell of drink, the torment of it was like being on a merry go round that was going too fast and i couldn't get off,but after a long time i at last admitted i had a problem big time, you really do need to go to your Dr for the help and advise that you will need,as it's no picnic,i tried going to AA but it was not for me,but don't knock it as it has helped thousands of people,it just was not for me,so i went to drug and alcohol, but my friend i wish you well and i know you can do it with the help that is out there, take care

I have been where you are. Most people don't know where hell on earth exists, I do. Contact your local Alcoholics Anonymous. Use a search engine and type in alcoholics anonymous, click on world service headquarters and they can direct you to a local meeting. It works if you've hit your bottom. My real life has just begun. I had medical problems from alcohol too. I've been sober 3 years because of the program. Go to the meetings and follow the suggestions. Don't be afraid to go, there you will find people just like you. You will finally find somewhere you belong. You will finally feel like U found your home. Can't tell you how much I'm involved in the program as that breaks my anonymity.More q's, e-mail iou1hpower@yahoo.com and maybe I can answer any more q's you have.

Congratulations, You have done one of the hardest things it takes and that is to recognize that you have a problem. I think there are several things that you can do to help you stay sober. 1) talk to your family Dr. He can prescribe you Antabuse and refer you to a therapist. If you dont feel comfortable doing this there are 800 numbers you can call. **** But, if you have a drinking very heavily YOU CANT JUST STOP because its very dangerous on your own.You will have to detox. You should be medically supervised.
2) join AA- go to the meetings every day/every hour if you have too!!
3) Ask yourself why drinking is no longer working for you, what have you given up to continue drinking?

Remember that there is not enough alcohol in the world to fix your problems. Know that you can free yourself form this addiction. AA is an option....if you don't smoke they do have non-smoking meetings. Keep that in mind because the smoke filled room really could make you not want to go back. Some people can go at it alone but support groups are better because there are people you meet with the same goal that you have. Do this for yourself. You deserve to be happy and healthy. Good luck.

Try making a list of all the reasons you want to stop. Then the next time you feel like drinking, look at the list and remind yourself exactally why you want to stop. Tell yourself that you're strong enough to do it and that you can overcome this. Don't let the alcohol get the best of you, take the upperhand. good luck.

You may or may not consider yourself to be an alchoholic, but it would certainly help yopu to go along to an AA meeting. They can be contain quite odd characters, but you will probably find that it helps give you some support.

I would also suggest taking up/increasing the exercise.

And getting some nice soft drinks into the fridge isn´t a bad idea either.

Contact your GP for advice. By all means try AA, but be aware that kind of rigid structure doesn't work for everyone with alcohol problems. If you try it and don't find it helpful, don't give up! Ask the doc about alternative treatment programs and keep going until you find something that works for you.

Good luck and congratulations on taking the first step towards dealing with it.

Other than shock taktics, then theres the AA but what you really need more than anything is the wil;l power because if you havent got that then your fooked basically! Theres no point other people trying to help you if you dont want to help yourself!!
