Check drain pipes for the sunroof and under the lower winshield panel - they could be clogged with leaves. Visit VW dealer, they can blow up the drainers - they know where. Also, they have new updated roof mouldings that help to stop leaks coming between the door and roof. If you have old-style mouldings, this could be the problem

1. Has it been raining
If yes then get in the car and have someone spray the doors, windshield, around the seals and the sunroof. you'll find the leak.
hard spray not just let the water run on the car. like a hard rain.

2. not raining.
has to be one of two things. Heater core leak....Accompanied by bad antifreeze smell.
or the A/C drain is plugged accompanied by a musty smell.
as bad as it is I agree with the sunroof drain. check that first.

The most likely cause is that you have a leaking door or windscreen seal, the heater is possible but you would know about it, for instance you would have no coolant and your engine would overheat. Best thing to do would be to have someone spray a hose over the car and watch for the water coming in, or alternatively take it through an automatic car wash and observe. Either way, you need to get the carpets and sound deadning out of the car and have them dried out, as they will be sopping wet, this is not good for the cars floor, leave that water there, it won't be long before the water is trying to eat it's way out!

CHECK AND SEE IF THE WATER SMELL LIKE ANTI FREEZE. IF YES IT'S THE HEATER CORE. IF NO THEN SIT INSIDE THE CAR WITH A FLASHLIGHT AND HAVE SOMEONE COMPLETELY SOAK YOUR CAR WITH A GARDEN HOSE. HAVE THEM SPRAY THE ROOF A BUNCH, YOUR WINDOWS AND DOORS AND JUST LOOK! YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO SEE THE LEAK IF IT'S AS BAD AS YOU SAY IT IS.
PS....WEAR A LIFE PRESERVER

i had the same problem on my 2000 passat. under the bonet beside the bulk head there is a drain hole that lets rain water out, make sure its not blocked, because it floods the car if it is.
