It depends on the type, and whether is has spread to other organs.

If they live long enough, most men would develop this cancer. It is often very slow-growing, and does not cause problems other than incontinence or trouble passing urine for many years. Left untreated though it would be fatal.

As men age, the prostate naturally enlarges, so most men develop symptoms similar to prostate cancer after the age of 50 - this is referred to as BPH.

A PSA test is the first step in a differential diagnosis of prostate cancer, but a final diagnosis requires a biopsy.

There are various procedures that can be undertaken:

Resection of the prostate - this is the most radical procedure. It removes the prostate, or part of it. It almost always affects the nerves that allow erections, so prostatectomy normally results in impotence.

Freezing - they can use special devices to freeze the cancerous part of the prostate. This kills those cells often without disrupting sexual performance

Microwave - the opposite approach, microwaves can be used to heat up and kill the cancerous cells.

If the cancer has spread to other organs, it is much more difficult and often impossible to treat successfully.

This is a highly subjective situation. Some are easy and some are very hard to cure. Your friend can improve his chances by reading Beating Cancer With Nutrition by Pat Quillen, and How to Prevent and Treat Cancer with Natural Medicine by Mike Murray. Good luck!

If it's detected early enough it is completely curable. That's why it's important to get checked for it annually - the ways they check for it aren't the most comfortable in the world and most men would rather not have it done but not doing it can kill you. That's what did my brother's grandfather in - it ended up killing him because he never got checked for it so by the time it was detected it was too late - it had spread throughout his body.
