The best definition of 'liberal' (in the modern sense) that I know is exemplified by the following story.
Anyone who thinks that the LRH is greedy is a 'liberal'.
"One day as the Little Red Hen was scratching in a field, she found a grain of wheat.
"This wheat should be planted," she said. "Who will plant this grain of wheat?"
"Not I," said the Duck.
"Not I," said the Cat.
"Not I," said the Dog.
"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.
Soon the wheat grew to be tall and yellow.
"The wheat is ripe," said the Little Red Hen. "Who will cut the wheat?"
"Not I," said the Duck.
"Not I," said the Cat.
"Not I," said the Dog.
"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.
When the wheat was cut, the Little Red Hen said, "Who will thresh the wheat?"
"Not I," said the Duck.
"Not I," said the Cat.
"Not I," said the Dog.
"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.
When the wheat was threshed, the Little Red Hen said, "Who will take this wheat to the mill?"
"Not I," said the Duck.
"Not I," said the Cat.
"Not I," said the Dog.
"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.
She took the wheat to the mill and had it ground into flour. Then she said, "Who will make this flour into bread?"
"Not I," said the Duck.
"Not I," said the Cat.
"Not I," said the Dog.
"Then I will," said the Little Red Hen. And she did.
She made and baked the bread. Then she said, "Who will eat this bread?"
"Oh! I will," said the Duck.
"And I will," said the Cat.
"And I will," said the Dog.
"No, No!" said the Little Red Hen. "I will do that." And she did."

I am aDemocrat but I want to answer too.
A: People that voted for Kerry may have been liberal, but all of them were either ignorant, hateful of Bush or blinded by idealism.
B. People who go to protests could either be very liberal or very conservative. Either end of the spectrum is your typical 'protester'. Hippies can be liberal but most have dropped out.
C. Most poor people are not liberal they are just dependent. They need their entitlements like a junkie needs a fix.
D. True, I am a teacher and most of us are liberals.
E. Secularists are liberals in a sense, but are more akin to socialists. The ACLU is just whacky. They have done some good and a lot of stupid (like defending NAMBLA!!!)
F. There are several camps that hate Bush, the liberals and the blindly idealistic, and many just ignorant of world affairs.
G. I am ex-military and I think it is good to set deadlines for war but bad to let the public, especially the enemy, know what your deadline is.
H. Some are liberals but most are really closet socialists.
Great Question!!!
I see myself as a liberal. But I am not a socialist. I feel that everyone should live and let live. I think that non-violent criminals should not go to jail. I think that gays should have civil unions that are as legally binding as marriage. I think that even though I am a Democrat admiting Bush has kept us safe is the truth.
I do not think that there should be any entitlement programs.
I do not think there should be affirmative action.
I do not think that any illegal immigrant should be given immunity.
I do not think anyone has the right to force me to pay for their health care.
I am a liberal, not a socialist. Just like as a Republican you can say I am a conservative, that does not mean I am right wing nut job who wants to burn all the Darwin books.
I can say I am a Democrat but I realize that Howard Dean and Hilary Clinton are socialists in Democrat clothing. It is those of us in the center that will always be tasked with doing the right thing!

I'll just start off with they think everyone else is stupid. Liberal is one of those words that have been twisted into having a new meaning. Progressive is another.
Your multiple-choice thing here is awfully loaded. Do you really think the ACLU is good for America? They do nothing for gun rights. They support man's right to have sex with young boys. They support equal rights for ILLLEGAL immigrants. I could go on with these lunatics, but I won't. PETA, btw, is much worse.
A liberal thinks that big government knows best. How is it in our best interest to continue to further dismantle the very system that was set in place by our founding fathers? They think anyone who thinks for one’s self (that is, when they do not follow the liberal ideology) is misguided at best and at worst dangerous, stupid, and evil.
I'd like to know how big government liberalism is such a good idea. Look what big government has brought upon us here in the USA. We have a country going deeper into debt mainly because of the social programs that take up 2/3 of the budget, and the government can't even manage that right. Social Security and Medicare are a mess. Much of Europe has set up their governments based upon the very same ideals that liberals in America want to emulate, and their economies are sluggish compared to ours.
How is it wrong to support school choice? Isn't the free market what made this country what it is today and shouldn't we try and bring that to our schools? I'm sure money would go towards Muslim schools, as well. Some countries in Europe actually do have school choice, and these schools are light years better than ours. It's not fair for poor kids to get stuck in shitty schools just because of where they live.
I'd also like to know what competent military strategist advocates letting our enemies know precisely when we plan on leaving Iraq. Last time I checked, Liberals were just as much in favor of the war on drugs, and are hardliners on gun rights. I'd put these two issues as bigger threats to our individual freedoms than a gay's "right" to marry. Just look at the way society has gone down the toilet since the liberals took over society. Chivalry is dead. People are increasingly selfish and rude. Race relations have probably gotten worse. I say when we get rid of Affirmative Action and the blacks start listening to Bill Cosby and not the NAACP and other black "leaders" the problems will start to erode a little. You'd think that Bush was a liberal the way he extended the assault weapons ban, expanded Medicare, refused to veto a bill until what his sixth year in office.
Really... you are the typical far left liberal. You think that George W. is a perfect example of a conservative Republican. You think conservatives are against civil liberties. You think we are all idiots. Democrats will continue to be the minority party as they push farther and farther into the fringe. Even when Bush tried to be a conservative for once, no one wanted to discuss a way to successfully privatize social security. Our country really needs a push to the right. It’s too bad Perot didn't win.

All of those examples COULD be liberals, but none of them include the definition of a liberal.
A liberal is a social belief in liberation from a norm or status quo, and seeks to undermine widely held beliefs and/or institutions. Liberals also typically uphold a large, active federal government that supercedes local government.
The problem with liberals, is they become their own worst enemy while they're undermining everything. So many activist liberals never seem to be happy because their careers are built upon social activism and criticism of some social practice which they must label "injustice" or have nothing to complain about. An example would be Jesse Jackson who has made a career attacking corporations for imaginary charges of "racism" for the purposes of extorting cash settlements.
Another example would be Barbara Boxer and Dianne Feinstein (California Senators) who consistently vote against sensible legislation like driver's licenses for illegal aliens because they feel it is "hurtful" to people or "discriminatory".

I believe liberals mean well...
My problem with them is I can't tell out of which side of their mouths they're talking. They say one thing, like public schools are wonderful and top notch, then they send their own children to private scools. Many liberals favor gun control to the point where everyday citizens won't be able to defend themselves, but then the same liberals go home to a secure gated community.
*sigh*

I. anyone that is on welfare or supports welfare the way it is . anyone who has a BA in english . anyone that doesn't believe in working hard for a living to support themselves and their family and counts on hand outs to make it in life . anyone that believes national health care would work . anyone who doesn't live in reality , a great example being hollywood , they don't know what the real world is really like and assume they do . And of course anyone that says they are " open minded " but will believe any BS they see as long as it is against the government . that sums it up

at the same time as the known definition is two (or better) consecutive quarters of decline contained in the GDP, maximum economists outline a recession as a recession because the time at the same time as business enterprise pastime has reached its top and begins to fall till the time at the same time as business enterprise pastime bottoms out. at the same time as the business enterprise pastime begins to upward push again it really is termed an expansionary era. So A is the answer.
