Sorry to hear that you heard your grandfather say that. However, the time he came up in has already been deeply embedded and he is too old to change.
What you can do, and I really don't know if it will help, is to let him know how you feel about that and that you don't like hearing that around you. It might help.
Good luck.

I'd gently ask Grandpa why he was using a word that would insult people. That some of your friends would be hurt to hear themselves being referred to in such a way. And that it really bothers you. If you really feel comfortable telling him what's in your mind you might even tell him that you really look up to him and that his using racist words goes against everything else that he has ever taught you.
It doesn't matter that times have changed and he is from a different era. He is not THAT old not to know better if he is still living.

Don't scold him! Just tell him that it's not politically correct and that it offends you. Remember, he is from a different generation, he just may not know that society looks down on the n-word or that he lives in an area where it is still used. My dad used say "colored folks" all the time and we would remind him of how archaic it sounded and then we'd leave it alone.

scold someone who paved the way for you & I....lol
thats hella funny!
Regardless of race that word should not be offensive! **** WUT YOU HERD! We use it out of context all day everyday!
Sure you can tell him you dislike the word or that he was wrong for using it but what will this solve or prove? This has been a fight and constant argument for generations now and WE must not continue with it! Slavery was abollished in the 1800's of the 19th century and WE as BLACK people who use the word so frequently Keep the word in existance! If we were to stop using it than maybe No one else would use it! **** IT! Scold him for what!? Doesnt make any sense to! lol

Let it pass. You can't teach an old dog new tricks. Times were different when he was young. The first time I heard my grandmother use the n word, I was horrified and very disappointed in her (I was a child).

I say in a joking way you can inform him that times have changed, that the word is taken offensively by all people. And that is why you should tell him.
