I guess the best way to answer that question is the speech writers are masters with putting words together that make the president sound intelligent. The president tells the writer what he wants to say and maybe how he wants to say it, and then the writer puts the ideas onto paper, hitting different talking points and whatnot, to express the president's position on the subject.

(Of course, if you know our president, you'd see why he needs a speech writer.)

Well, considering who is president i am actually happy that he has a speech writer. Although Clinton used his speech writers to hammer out a framework and he filled it in himself. Often he also tossed the entire speech five minutes before start and did everything freestyle.

Could anyone imagine when Puppetdent Bush wouldn't be scripted? Total disaster.

I think it's because they make so many speeches, and the speeches are so well scrutinized by political opponents.

I, for one, hearken to the days when men like Abraham Lincoln would write their own speeches in their own words. SAY IT LIKE IT IS, I always say.

There seems to be too much at stake in the realm of politics for actual honesty. A friend of mine taught me a bit about the art of rhetoric (it's a subject you can study in college, believe it or not) and he was a little convincing as to its importance.

Wouldn't it have been refreshing for the President to have come right out and said "Osama bin Laden wants to start a holy war against the U.S. and the West, so we're going to upset his plans by changing the balance of power in the Middle East. We're going to take over Iraq and turn it into a secular nation on OUR side..."?

Well, I think it would be cool.

Bush can't string two sentences together with a dictionary,,, he needs speech writers,, and war planners,, advice from Laura and Jesus,,, the Evangelists on his crusade,,, invasion strategists,, fiscal responsibility advisers,,, torture techniques,,, Cheney tactics,, Rice taunts,,, the usual Republican rhetoric from Rove,,,
most all presidents have speech writers,, although some like Bill Clinton are so brilliant,, they probably don't need them

same reason all your heroes on network TV have teams of speech writers, so they always say the right thing.
